The First Step to Better Health Isn't Diet or Exercise — It's Light

Humanity is Light-Starved

For thousands of years, humans lived primarily outdoors, waking with the sun, working under the sky, and resting as daylight faded. They weren’t wearing sunglasses, they weren’t trapped behind glass windows, and they weren’t bombarded by artificial blue light at night.

Fast forward to today: Over 90% of people spend most of their time indoors—working, eating, and even exercising under artificial lighting, completely disconnected from the natural light signals our bodies rely on to function optimally (EPA, 2023). And when they do step outside, they often block their two primary light pathways without even realizing it.

  • Their eyes—covered with sunglasses, glasses, or contacts, preventing full-spectrum sunlight from reaching the brain and properly regulating circadian rhythms, hormone production, and mood.

  • Their skin—slathered in sunscreen or covered with excessive clothing, blocking the sun’s ability to stimulate mitochondrial function, produce vitamin D, and support cellular repair.

Without these essential light inputs, the body falls out of sync, leading to disrupted sleep, sluggish metabolism, hormone imbalances, and chronic fatigue. Pair that with constant artificial blue light exposure at the wrong times, and it’s a recipe for biological chaos—a mismatch between how we live and how our bodies were designed to thrive.

This shift has created a modern epidemic of light starvation.

  • Instead of beautiful sunlight hitting our eyes to help regulate hormones, we’re staring at screens.

  • Instead of full-spectrum light charging our mitochondria, we’re being drained by artificial environments.

  • Instead of daily sun exposure optimizing sleep, metabolism, and mood, we’re out of sync, struggling with fatigue, anxiety, and hormone imbalances.

Being light-starved while simultaneously being overexposed to toxic artificial blue light is a disastrous combination.

  • Our bodies aren’t getting enough natural light to thrive.

  • But they’re getting too much artificial light, especially at the wrong times, disrupting sleep, mitochondrial function, and long-term health.

This modern mismatch is why so many people are struggling with chronic symptoms and don’t even realize light is a missing piece of their health puzzle.

Your Body is an Electrical System—And Light is the Power Source

Your body isn’t just a collection of organs—it’s an electrical system. Every single function, from your heartbeat to your brain waves, is powered by bioelectricity. And just like a house needs a working electrical system to function, your body needs the right light signals to stay balanced and energized.

Think of your mitochondria as tiny power plants inside your cells. Their job is to generate ATP (energy), but they don’t just run on food—they run on light.

  • Morning sunlight gives mitochondria the charge they need to function optimally.

  • Artificial blue light at night throws off their rhythm, reducing energy production and increasing oxidative stress.

  • Infrared light from the sun repairs and supports mitochondrial health, while too much time indoors weakens these processes.

Light isn’t just about seeing—it’s about powering every biological process in your body.

Diving Deeper: The Two Ways Your Body Absorbs Light

Your body takes in light in two primary ways, both of which are essential for optimal mitochondrial function:

1. Through Your Eyes

(Not by looking directly at the sun, but by exposing your naked eyes to natural light)

  • Light enters the retina and signals the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the master clock that regulates your circadian rhythm.

  • The SCN then directs hormone production, influencing cortisol (wakefulness), melatonin (sleep), serotonin (mood), and a lot more.

  • This is why removing sunglasses, regular glasses, and contacts and exposing your unfiltered eyes to natural sunlight is essential.

2. Through Your Skin

(By allowing sunlight to hit bare skin without sunscreen or clothing that blocks full-spectrum light)

  • Sunlight penetrates deeply into the mitochondria, stimulating ATP (energy) production.

  • Infrared and ultraviolet (UV) light help with nitric oxide release, improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and aiding detoxification.

  • Microdosing sunlight throughout multiple wavelengths during the day (short bursts of 5-20 minutes of sun exposure) helps the body adapt without burning and supports vitamin D and overall hormone balance.

Together, these mechanisms allow your body to sync with natural light cycles, optimize energy production, and regulate critical biological processes.

The Takeaway: We Need to Reconnect With Light

If you’re feeling stuck in your health, start here. Light is the simplest, yet most powerful tool to reclaim your energy and vitality.

  • Prioritize morning sun to anchor your circadian rhythm and kick off hormones critical to start your day.

  • Limit blue light at night to support deep sleep and hormone balance.

  • Expose yourself to infrared and red light through sunlight and supplement with red light therapy panels with both red and near-infrared wavelengths to boost mitochondrial function.

  • Microdose sunlight at various times throughout the day by allowing your eyes and skin to take in natural light.

This is just the beginning. In a future post, we’ll explore how deep cellular hydration, limiting toxins and EMFs, detoxification, movement, and nutrition build upon this foundation to help you achieve what I call zero-symptom living.
